I constantly get asked by people how they can achieve their goal to live life on their terms and create a career that makes them come alive. It’s no surprise, since that’s my expertise.

Unfortunately, many people don’t think outside of the box. We tend to think in tactics and in conventional ways and therefore, too many times, overcomplicate things.

Today, I want to share with you the most powerful way to get from where you are to where you want to be.

The Fear of Taking the Leap

The number one reason why people don’t take the leap and start pursuing their dreams is fear. Fear of failure, fear of loss of social status, sometimes even fear of success and the burden of having to trump that success next time.

There are many ways to overcome the fear. I have recently written on that topic in 7 Steps to Overcome the Fear of Pursuing Your Passion (or Basically Anything). Even though that exercise works like a charm, too many people fail to take action after they have completed it.

The fear that we face comes from uncertainty. We don’t know if what we pursue will succeed. There are no guarantees in life.

Many times, the odds are against us. So how do the people who make a difference in the world, change millions of people’s lives and who live their dreams accomplish it?

They surround themselves with people who are where they want to be.

Jim Rohn once said “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” What if those five people were the ones who are living your dreams?

Let me show you why it’s so important to surround yourself with the people who are where you want to be.

1. You Gain Clarity

Many times, we lack of clarity. Maybe we think that a path is right or that the business idea we have chosen may be a great one, but rarely do we have 100% clarity.

By talking to the people who are living the life you want to live, you gain a lot of clarity if your chosen path is right for you. You can hear their stories and get a feeling if both of you share similar values. You can sense if the path they have chosen is also right for you.

Because you gain more clarity, you also gain motivation to pursue what you really want.

2. You Gain Confidence

Even the most confident of us can struggle when we are uncertain if something will succeed or not. By talking to the people who are living your dreams, you gain confidence that it’s possible because they have achieved it.

The more you learn about them the more you see that they are just ordinary people with a strong positive mindset and plenty of failures on their track record.

When you see their vulnerable side, you gain confidence that what may seem impossible, is definitely possible.

3. You Build Your Network

In order to pursue your dreams and follow your passion, you must have a supportive network of people surrounding you. Who would be better suited for that network than people who are living your dreams and can offer encouragement because they have walked the path themselves.

These people are in positions of power and influence already and can open doors to hidden opportunities. They know what’s happening in the market and at some point, you may even be able to partner up with them. Maybe you eventually do business together or they refer you to somebody you can do business with.

I have recently written about building that support network in Who Helps You Get Up When You Fall Down?.

4. You Get Ideas & Advice

Many times, we are stuck in a box with our thinking. It’s one of the reasons why we hire coaches. Coaches can help us to get out of that in-the-box thinking and see new opportunities and options. That’s why I have a coach.

People who are working in your dream career can do the exact same thing. Because they are already in the situation that you want to be in, they can give you a completely different perspective. They can also help you cut your learning curve and save a lot of time, money and energy because they know what works and what does not.

By talking to the people who are living your dreams, you get plenty of new ideas. It opens up your mind and fuels it with new thoughts and inputs. Maybe you come up with a business model to put your dream into action. Maybe you change your thinking as a result of talking to them and therefore take a huge step forward.

5. You Find Mentors

The people who are living your dreams can become your mentors. They are the people who have walked the path already and are usually more than happy to share their wisdom with people who are determined and committed to make their dreams a reality.

I recently talked to one of my mentors and he told me one of the main reasons he enjoys working with me is that I implement the ideas we come up with instead of just writing them down.

Most probably, these people won’t become your mentors the first time you meet. However, if you build a relationships with them, finding a mentor is certainly one thing that can evolve from it.

6. You Close the Gap

The reason why we have not reached a certain goal today is because there is a gap between where we are and where we want to be. In order to achieve the goal, that gap needs to be closed. Sounds simple.

The inspiring leaders you look up to are your gateway to close that gap. By surrounding yourself with them, you close the gap in your mind and you become one of them. You are part of the inner circle, even if you are not yet where you want to be.

All the big things you achieve in life start in your mind. If you can’t imagine it, it won’t happen.

By surrounding yourself with these inspiring leaders, you close that believe gap. Your mind recognizes that you are a part of them and it will make sure the other gaps (i.e. financial) is closed as fast as possible.

Who Should You Connect With?

Maybe you are asking yourself who you should surround yourself with to achieve your goals and dreams. You don’t need to start with Tony Robbins, Warren Buffet, Richard Branson or Oprah.

Start with people who are more in reach of you. You want to think about your next step. What is the next big goal you want to achieve in the next 12 months?

Then find people who have achieved that goal and surround yourself with them.

Maybe your goal is to become a life coach who regularly earns CHF 10’000.- per month. Maybe it’s to become a published author. Maybe you want to get your first three consulting clients. Maybe your goal is to climb Mount Everest.

Whatever the goal is, find the people who have done it and surround yourself with them.
